My 2 previous Snuffles websites had gone off-line due to neglect (Geocities in the 1990s and Shaw in the 2000s), but it's now back by popular demand!
GUND was founded in 1898 by Adolf Gund. When he retired in 1929, he sold the business to Jacob Swedlin (the father of the Rita Raiffe, the designer of Snuffles. He passed control of GUND to Rita and her husband Herbert in 1969. Their son, Bruce Raiffe, became the president of GUND from 1993 to 2008. In 2008 (after 110 years), the Raiffe family sold GUND to the Enesco company.
Snuffles was designed by Rita Raiffe. In 1980, Rita was inspired by the shape of a crescent moon and designed a happy bear to look up at the moon. This also allows Snuffles to look up at whoever is hugging him :)
Snuffles has been manufactured in Korea, Japan, Thailand but mostly in China. In 2010, Snuffles is celebrating his 30th birthday with the company. During this period, there have been almost 150 different styles of Snuffles made!
Snuffles has made a number of accomplishments over his lifetime including:
According to the 2004 reviewers, "With his round tummy, this short, lovable armful of a bear is likely to become a constant companion."
This website is meant for collectors to keep track of the wide variety of Snuffleses that have been made over the years and also to introduce new fans to this classic teddy bear.
The list was created based on my personal collection which I began 18 years ago as well as information from other collectors, Gund catalogs and what has been seen on eBay. I have not used Wikipedia as a reference since I had previously edited the Snuffles reference due to errors and I cannot verify who contributed to it.
